Currency

The official currency of Mali is the West African CFA Franc (XOF), which is pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate (€1 = 655.957 XOF). Banknotes are available in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10000 XOF, while coins range from 1 to 250 XOF. It is advisable to carry a mix of denominations, including smaller notes, for daily transactions.

Credit cards

Credit card acceptance in Mali is very limited. Major credit cards like Visa and, to a lesser extent, MasterCard, are primarily accepted only in large international hotels, some upscale restaurants, and a few major supermarkets, mostly within the capital city of Bamako. Outside of Bamako, credit card use is virtually non-existent. ATMs are available in Bamako and some larger towns, but they can be unreliable, frequently out of service, or run out of cash. It is strongly recommended to rely primarily on cash (XOF) for most transactions. Carrying Euros for exchange at banks or official exchange bureaus is also a practical option, as they are easily convertible.

Local language(s)

The official language of Mali is French, which is used in government, education, and business. While French is essential for formal communication and navigating many aspects of daily life, especially in urban centers, Bambara (Bamanankan) is the most widely spoken indigenous language and serves as a lingua franca, understood by approximately 80% of the population. Other significant national languages include Fula (Pulaar), Dogon, Soninke, Songhay, and Tamasheq. For tourists, a basic understanding of French is highly beneficial, and learning a few common phrases in Bambara can greatly enhance interactions with locals and is often met with appreciation.
