Here is everything you need to know about Satellite Internet in India: Prune
Recently, there's been a lot of buzz surrounding satellite internet in India and what it could mean for us once it's available. The sky is the limit for people, such as Elon Musk who is already behind this major operation. And other big companies such as Bharti Airtel and Amazon are also competing to have a big share of the pie in the world of satellite internet.
But what is this project about, and how will it benefit us? You must have plenty of questions about this up-and-coming technology. Our experts at Prune have covered everything you need to know about satellite internet and how it could play a big role in your life in the long haul.
What is Satellite Internet?
Satellite internet is a wireless system in which the internet is beamed down from the satellites in space. Due to this process, there is no requirement of endless cables or DSL, in which the data transfers through wires. It is touted to be much faster than the usual internet options and can be used from the remote and rural areas so people can stay connected from any part of the world. Since land-based internet connections like cable internet and broadband have limited access, satellite internet technology gives the process of communication a boost far and wide, even in underdeveloped areas.
How does Satellite Internet work?
This technology uses satellites orbiting in space to get internet signals using radio waves. The process requires three satellite dishes. It includes one in the space, one with your internet provider, and the third one in your home or office. Once the connection establishes the data transfers from your ISP to the satellite in space. It then sends signals to the dish installed on your property. You can expect internet speed to go up to 300 Mbps using satellite internet in the future, from the usual 10-40 Mbps internet speed that we use daily.
When will it be launched in India, and who will provide it?
There's no date for the launch yet, but you can expect the services to begin from the end of next year. And companies such as Elon Musk's SpaceX are likely to start its Starlink Project in December 2022. The project is still in the initial stages for now, and the company is seeking approval from the government authorities in India. And many other players are competing against one another to provide the best satellite internet service to India. These are Bharti Airtel, Amazon's Kuiper Project, Tata's Nelco, and Hughes. All these companies are awaiting approval from the government departments to get the ball rolling, and you can expect highly-advanced internet services from them soon.
What does the government have to say about these services?
The government has recently made an official announcement. It said that the Elon Musk-backed company Starlink Internet Services is not licensed to provide satellite internet services in India. And it has also cautioned the citizens to avoid using the services until it gets an all-clear from The Department of Telecom (DoT). Also, Starlink is yet to comply with the rules and regulations of DoT to set its base in the country.
