Mobile network coverage in Liberia is primarily provided by two major operators, Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange Liberia. Tourists can expect reliable 4G/LTE connectivity in major urban centers and along key transport routes, with 3G and 2G networks extending to many smaller towns and some rural areas. While remote regions may still experience limited or no service, the main tourist destinations and cities are well-covered. Both physical SIM cards and eSIMs, such as those offered by prune, utilize these established networks, ensuring consistent access to mobile services across the country where coverage is available.

Urban Connectivity Hubs

In Liberia, 5G mobile network coverage is not yet commercially available for tourists, with operators still in the early stages of deployment or planning. However, 4G/LTE connectivity is robust and widely accessible in all major metropolitan areas. The capital city, Monrovia, boasts the most comprehensive and reliable 4G/LTE network, ensuring seamless internet access and communication for residents and visitors alike. Beyond Monrovia, other significant urban centers such as Gbarnga in Bong County and Buchanan in Grand Bassa County also benefit from strong 4G/LTE coverage, providing good quality mobile internet services in these key regional hubs.

Currency

The official currency of Liberia is the Liberian Dollar (LRD). However, the United States Dollar (USD) is widely accepted and often preferred for larger transactions, with many prices quoted in USD. It is common to receive change in LRD even when paying with USD. It's advisable to carry a mix of both currencies, especially smaller denominations of USD, as exchanging money outside of Monrovia can be challenging. Be aware of fluctuating exchange rates and exchange money at reputable banks or licensed forex bureaus.

Credit cards

Credit card acceptance in Liberia is very limited. Major hotels, a few upscale restaurants, and some large supermarkets in Monrovia might accept Visa or MasterCard, but reliability can be an issue, and transaction fees may apply. Outside of Monrovia, credit cards are rarely accepted. ATMs are available in Monrovia but can be unreliable, frequently out of service, or run out of cash. It is crucial to carry sufficient cash (both USD and LRD) for your expenses, as you cannot rely on credit cards or ATMs for daily transactions.

Local language(s)

The official language of Liberia is English. Liberian English has its own distinct accent and some unique vocabulary, but it is generally understandable to native English speakers. In urban areas and among those involved in business or tourism, English is widely spoken and understood. However, Liberia is a linguistically diverse country with over 20 indigenous languages spoken by various ethnic groups. Prominent indigenous languages include Kpelle, Bassa, Grebo, Dan (Gio), Kru, Lorma, Mano, and Gola. Learning a few basic phrases in Liberian English or a common local dialect can be a friendly gesture.
