Thanks to a bilateral agreement, you can enjoy Russia's wonders for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without the hassle of a visa application.

This visa-free entry is a real tuanis deal, but remember it's strictly for short-term stays. If your travel plans extend beyond 90 days, or if you're planning on working or studying, then you'll need to apply for a traditional visa through a Russian embassy or consulate before your trip, mae.

Before you pack your bags, mae, make sure your passport is in tip-top shape. Russian authorities require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Russia. It's a standard international rule, so no surprises here.

Also, don't forget the blank pages! You'll need at least two empty pages in your passport for entry and exit stamps. It's a small detail, but an important one to ensure your trip goes smoothly, con mucho gusto.

If you're just passing through Russia on your way to another destination, and you're staying within the international transit zone of the airport for less than 24 hours, you generally won't need a transit visa. This is for those quick layovers where you don't clear immigration, mae.

However, if your layover is longer than 24 hours, or if you need to change airports, or if you plan to leave the transit zone for un toque to explore, you would typically need to enter Russia. Since Costa Ricans have visa-free entry for up to 90 days, you'd simply use that status instead of needing a separate transit visa. Always confirm with your airline, just to be safe.

Unlike some other countries, Russia doesn't currently operate a universal electronic travel authorization (ETA) system for all visa-exempt visitors, similar to what you might find in the US or Canada. For Costa Rican citizens, your visa-free status for short stays means you don't need a separate ETA.

While there's an eVisa system available (which we'll cover next), it's not a mandatory pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers like yourself, mae. Your valid passport and adherence to the visa-free agreement are usually all you need for short tourist visits.

Even though Costa Ricans enjoy visa-free entry for up to 90 days, Russia does offer a unified electronic visa (eVisa) system. This eVisa allows for single entry for various purposes, including tourism, for up to 16 days. It's an alternative option, especially if your stay is shorter and you prefer the eVisa process, or if you're from a country that does require a visa.
