What is Mobile Number Portability?

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a service that enables telecom service users to switch operators without changing their mobile numbers. A user can port his mobile number to any other service provider of his choice if he is dissatisfied with the services of his present operator.

How to port your mobile number to a different service provider

There are several processes involved in porting a mobile number. Follow these steps below to port your mobile number to any operator.

Step 1. Generate porting code:

Generating a porting code, which is the first step in the porting process, is only valid for four days after it is generated.

Send the following text message to generate the porting code:

PORT(Space) (Mobile Number) to 1900

Example:

PORT 9999999999 to 1900

Step 2. Receive UPC code:

You will get an SMS from 1901 with your Unique Porting Code (UPC code) after texting 1900.

Step 3. Submit Porting Request:

You must now submit your porting request to the operator. Prune makes it simple to complete the task online. Do you wish to PORT your number? Visit https://prune.co.in/port-number/

Step 4: Activation

You can switch to and use your new SIM when your current connection stops working.

Note: Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will take 2-3 working days to PORT your number.

What requirements must be met in order to be granted a Unique Porting Request (UPC)?

Generation of the Unique Porting Code (UPC) will be ensured by fulfilling the following eligibility requirements:

(a) In the case of a post-paid mobile connection, the subscriber has paid any "Outstanding Dues" to the current telecom service provider for the bill(s) that were issued in accordance with the regular billing cycle.

(b) Activation must have taken place in the current operator's network for at least 90 days.

(c) No request has been made to change the owner of the mobile phone.

(d) In accordance with the subscriber agreement's exit clause, the subscriber has no outstanding contractual obligation(s) that must be satisfied.

(e) A court has not ruled that porting a mobile number is illegal.

(f) The requested porting of the mobile number is not pending litigation.

The request for a UPC will be rejected if any one or more of the conditions (a) to (f) are not met, and the reason for denial will be communicated to the subscriber through SMS.

What is the mobile number portability process?

Generate a UPC at the beneficiary operator's point of sale. Send the word "PORT" to 1900, followed by a space and the ten-digit mobile number that needs to be ported. The word "PORT" must be case-insensitive, so it can be sent as "port," "Port," etc. The subscriber's mobile device will receive the UPC through SMS.

Complete the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and the Porting Form for the operator of your choosing, making sure to include the correct UPC. Pick up a new SIM card from the operator at the customer care centre or online website like prune after submitting the required payment and KYC documentation. Your porting request will be confirmed by the MNP service provider in a message.

It takes three working days to port within a Licensed Service Area (LSA), for example, within Gujarat LSA. It takes five working days to port from one LSA to another (for example, from Delhi to Mumbai). Additionally, the porting process takes five working days in the case of corporate numbers. [In the nation, there are 22 geographical areas recognised as LSA] In the licenced service zones of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and the North East, porting may take up to 15 working days.

You will receive an SMS letting you know the day and time of the porting, which takes place at night and leaves you without service for a maximum of four hours.

4. Place the new SIM card into your phone. Your mobile number has been verified and is now active on the network of your new service provider.

How can a customer withdraw his porting request?

Within 24 hours of submitting the porting request, a subscriber may cancel it by sending an SMS to 1900. Send an SMS with the word "CANCEL" followed by a space, then the ten-digit mobile number whose porting request is being cancelled.

What are the reasons of Rejection of Porting Request?

For individual mobile numbers- If the subscriber submits a porting request to the recipient operator within the UPC's validity period, the request won't be denied.

For Corporate mobile numbers – If a legitimate authorization letter from the corporate organisation is not included with the porting request, the existing operator may reject it.
