Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also represents Varanasi in Parliament Monday inaugurated the first phase of his dream project the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi. the project aimed at enhancing the pilgrims' experience in the ancient temple town.

The corridor will be 320-meter long and a 20-meter wide walkway. The corridor connects the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the ghats of the river Ganga.

The total estimated cost of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project is being estimated at Rs. 800 crore and the total area of the project is reported 5,000 hectares.

Prime Minister said at least 40 ancient temples were rediscovered during the work and ensuring there is no change in the original structure.

About Kashi Vishwanath temple

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The present structure stands on the banks of the Ganges river. And it was built in 1780 by the Maratha ruler Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore. While it has been destroyed several times before by the Muslim rulers including Aurangzeb before the 1780s, the temple still stands the test of time after being rebuilt later and renovated.

It still retains its majestic beauty and historical significance. And this is what makes the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project a significant move from the government as it is one of the most-visited holy sites in India. While the original structure remains untouched, the overall temple area has spread to 5 lakh sq feet. The project has added a whole new complex to the area, which will stand as a symbol of spirituality and India’s rich traditions. Apart from easy access to the city's ghats, the temple area now sees 23 new buildings. It will include facilities such as City Museum, Viewing Gallery, Tourist Facilitation Centre, and Food Court, and a lot more.
