Reliance Jio to bring Satellite Internet Service to India! Here's what you need to know - Prune

When it comes to satellite internet technology, everyone had their eyes set on Elon Musk's venture named Starlink. The SpaceX CEO is launching private satellites into space that will help provide high-speed internet to people around the world. But it looks like India is also stepping up its game and is ready to deliver its satellite-based broadband service to its citizens.

Reliance Jio has officially announced its partnership with satellite and network-based solutions provider SES. The two companies have formed a Joint Venture (JV) and, it will strive to bring satellite internet service to India.

Here's the official statement made by both the companies: "The joint venture will be the vehicle for providing SES's satellite data and connectivity services in India, except for certain international aeronautical and maritime customers who may be served by SES. It will have availability of up to 100Gbps capacity from SES and will leverage Jio's premiere position and sales reach in India to unlock this market opportunity. Jio, as an anchor customer of the joint venture, has entered into a multi-year capacity purchase agreement, based on certain milestones along with gateways and equipment purchase with a total contract value of circa $100 million (roughly Rs. 750 crore)."

The project will be similar to Elon Musk's Starlink, and you can expect the internet speed to come with up to 100Gbps capacity from SES. The joint venture aims to build a multi-orbit space network for Indian customers. And along with a few international aeronautical and maritime clients. The joint venture will use SES-12, SES's high-throughput GEO satellite serving India, and SES's next-generation MEO constellation to expand Jio's satellite internet service in the country.

Jio and SES will have an equity stake of 51 percent and 49 percent in the project. This news comes well after the recent updates about 5G development in India, and satellite internet could be the next big thing after 5G that will become a regular part of our lives. With SES's satellite data and connectivity services, it could be a major turning point in the advancement of internet connectivity services.
