Is the 5G network in India in its final stages of development? Let's find out! - Prune

The 5G technology has seen years of delay in India. It has been almost a decade since the discussion around it began, and yet we didn't see definite results. But 2022 might be the year when we finally see the launch of the 5G network by the end of it, especially after the recently announced auctions for the top telcos of India. The country can expect to see its first 5G spectrum auction this year, and the process will conclude by August. After that, the process to roll out 5G technology in India will officially begin.

And recently, the telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed the topic during India Telecom 2022 business event. According to him, the 5G project is in its final stages of development, and everything is happening in a timely manner. Here's the official statement made by him during the event, "The country has also developed its own indigenous 4G core and radio network. The 5G network is also in its final stages of development. The country is participating today in the development of 6G standards, in the thought process of 6G."

The Minister also stated, "Today, electronics manufacturing in India is close to $75 billion. It's growing at more than 20 percent CAGR. Now, we have launched a major semiconductor programme, a very comprehensive programme in which right from silicon chip to compound semiconductors, design-led manufacturing, creating a series of entrepreneurs in design and also finally to develop 85,000 semiconductor engineers."

This news comes days after the Union Budget announced plans for 5G this year and how the telecom companies need to participate in a specially-organized auction to facilitate the process smoothly. By the end of March, we can expect to receive an update report on the 5G launch in India once the auctions are conducted.

The Finance Minister while announcing the Union budget also spoke about a scheme for design-led manufacturing that will help strengthen the 5G project. It comes as a part of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI), and the government will also focus on bringing it to remote and rural areas under the BharatNet project in 2022 and 2023.
